Stiff back in the morning: why the first 10 minutes are hard and what you can do about it
Key takeaways
- A stiff back in the morning is common: at night your spinal discs take up water and your back muscles barely move for hours, so the first movements feel harder.
- The first 10 minutes set the tone for your morning: get up slowly, move a little while still in bed, then take a warm shower.
- For roughly an hour after waking up, deep forward bending and heavy lifting put more strain on your lower back, so keep this time for lighter movements.
- If you sit at work, standing up during the day and the 3 evening steps make a big difference to how the next morning feels.
- ReBorn cream massaged into your lower back after a shower may help tight muscles relax, the BELTT waist belt is for times of strain, and BACKO reminds you to keep good posture.
- If the pain radiates into your leg, comes with numbness or does not ease even at night, do not experiment at home: get a doctor's opinion.

You get up, and you feel it with the very first movement: your lower back does not want to bend, your back feels as if it were made of one piece. Half an hour later it is better, and by noon you have forgotten about it. The next morning it starts all over again.
This article is about morning stiffness: what happens to your back at night, how best to get up, and what you can do in the evening and during the day so the next morning starts more easily. If your lower back hurts in the evening after a long day of sitting instead, we wrote about that in detail in our lower back pain after sitting article.
Why is your back stiff in the morning?
At night, when you lie down, the load is taken off your spine and your spinal discs take up water, so in the morning they are fuller and tighter than in the evening. Meanwhile your back muscles barely move for hours and the tissues are less flexible. Together, these give you the feeling that the first movements are hard and bending is not as easy as during the day.
During the day, when you stand and sit, your spinal discs gradually lose some of their water content, and at night they take it back. That is why you are a little taller in the morning than in the evening. This is a natural process, not a fault. However, fuller discs tolerate deep bending less well in the morning, which is why putting on socks or bending down to tie your shoelaces feels harder.
As for the muscles: if you sleep in one position all night, the muscles around your lower back and hips stay in a shortened or tight position for hours. If you sat a lot the day before, your hip flexors are tighter too, and that still pulls on your lower back in the morning. That is why mornings get worse towards the end of a week spent sitting.
How to get up so the first 10 minutes do not hurt
Do not jerk yourself upright. While still lying down, move your back and hips with a few slow movements, roll onto your side to get up, and do not rush the first 10 minutes. A warm shower afterwards helps a lot: warm water relaxes tight muscles, and moving gets easier afterwards too.
- Knee pulls lying down (1 minute). Lying on your back, pull your knees towards your chest one at a time, then both together. This gently rounds your lower back and starts to loosen the muscles around it.
- Knee drops to the side (1 minute). With your knees bent and feet on the bed, slowly drop both knees to the right, then to the left. This gives your spine a gentle twist without any load.
- Get up from your side. Roll onto your side, lower your legs over the edge of the bed, and push yourself up to sitting with your arms. This way your lower back does not have to lift your upper body with one strong bend.
- Warm shower (5 minutes). Let the warm water run over your lower back and back. Warmth helps your muscles relax, and moving is easier afterwards.
- Take the first 10 minutes slowly. Walk around your home, make breakfast, but do not tidy up or lift anything yet. This way your body warms up gradually and does not take a load in its stiffest state.

What to avoid in the first hour after waking up
In the first hour after waking up your spinal discs are still fuller, so deep forward bending and heavy lifting put more strain on your lower back at this time. Keep this time for lighter movements: put your socks on sitting down, tie your shoes with your foot on a chair, and leave heavy shopping and lifting for later.
- Socks and shoes sitting down. Standing and balancing on one leg puts your lower back into its deepest bend.
- No morning stretching with deep forward bends. Touching your toes in the morning is not a good idea. If you want to stretch, do it in the afternoon or evening.
- Lift from your knees. If you do have to lift something in the morning (a child, dog food, washing), bend your knees and keep the load close to your body.
- Train later. If you train in the morning, make your warm-up longer and leave exercises with deep bending (deadlifts, forward bends) for the end.
Our view: the answer to morning stiffness is not a big stretch in the morning, but a slow start. Stretching belongs in the evening, when your muscles have already warmed up over the day.
What you can do at your desk during the day
Part of your morning stiffness comes from the day before. If you sit for 8–10 hours at a stretch, your hip flexors and the area around your lower back are tight by evening, and this does not fully ease overnight. Standing up briefly every hour, taking a few steps and sitting upright are worth more than one long workout squeezed in at night.
- Stand for 2 minutes every hour. Set a reminder on your phone, stand up and walk to get a glass of water.
- Standing hip opener. Take a big step forward, bend your back knee slightly and push your hips forward for 20–30 seconds on each side. This gives the hip flexor, which shortens while you sit, its length back.
- Monitor at eye level. If you look down at your screen, your shoulders drop forward and your back works in a hunched position all day.

3 evening steps for an easier morning
In the evening your muscles are already warm, so this is the best time to loosen up. A warm shower, followed by 5 minutes of stretching and a comfortable sleeping position, can together help your back feel less stiff in the morning. The whole thing takes no more than 15 minutes.
- Warm shower, then cream on your lower back. After a shower your skin and muscles are warm. If you thoroughly massage a recovery cream into both sides of your lower back at this point, the massage itself helps you relax, and it is a good moment for the cream too.
- 5 minutes of stretching on the floor. Knee pulls lying on your back, a hip opener in a half-kneeling position, and child's pose (sit back on your heels and lean forward with your arms stretched out in front). Hold each for 30–60 seconds while breathing out slowly. This way the muscles that shortened during the day start the night from a looser position.
- Comfortable sleeping position. If you sleep on your back, put a pillow under your knees; if you sleep on your side, put a pillow between your knees. This way your lower back does not twist or arch too much at night.
Cream, waist belt, posture corrector: which one helps when?
The three products work at different times of day. ReBorn cream goes on your lower back after your morning and evening shower, the BELTT waist belt is for times of strain (desk work, lifting, gardening), and the BACKO posture corrector reminds you to sit up straight during the day. None of them replaces movement, but each can make your daily routine easier.
| Product | When | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| ReBorn cream | After showering, 2–3 times a day | About a walnut-sized amount, massaged in until fully absorbed |
| BELTT waist belt | During desk work, lifting, long periods of standing | 20–30 minutes a day to start with, do not wear it while sleeping |
| BACKO posture corrector | During the day, in front of the monitor | 20–30 minutes a day to start with, later 1–2 hours |
ReBorn is a cream made with extracts of 12 herbs (including arnica, rosemary, juniper and mint), for massage and for care after exercise. Massaged into the area along the spine and the lower back, it may help tight muscles relax and gives a pleasant, refreshing sensation. As we recommend applying it after bathing, both your morning and evening shower are good opportunities.
The BELTT waist belt supports your lower back with 4 built-in steel stays and is adjustable with a double hook-and-loop fastener. It can be used during desk work and longer periods of sitting too, not just for physical work. The belt does not hold your body for you: it supports and reminds you, while your muscles still have to do the work. So put it on for the time of strain and take it off afterwards.

The BACKO posture corrector gently draws your shoulders back, reminding you to sit up straight. When you sit in front of a monitor, this puts less strain on your neck and shoulder muscles. It is thin and can be worn under clothing.

When to get a medical opinion
Morning stiffness that eases within half an hour can usually be traced back to the causes above. However, if the pain is severe, does not ease during the day, or comes with other signs, do not try home remedies: get the opinion of a doctor or physiotherapist.
Do not wait in these cases:
- the pain radiates into your buttock or leg, with numbness or weakness;
- the stiffness lasts more than an hour in the morning and has come back every day for weeks;
- the pain is strong even at night and at rest, or wakes you up;
- it comes with fever, weight loss or generally feeling unwell;
- it started after a fall, an accident or sudden lifting.
The BELTT waist belt and the BACKO posture corrector are wellness products. Neither these nor ReBorn cream are intended to treat any disease, and they do not replace medical care or physiotherapy.
Summary
A stiff back in the morning usually comes down to two things: at night your spinal discs take up water, and your muscles stay still for hours. What helps is not a big stretch in the morning, but getting up slowly, a warm shower and a patient first hour.
The next morning, however, starts the day before: by standing up every hour at your desk and with a 15-minute evening routine. If you are looking for products to help, the cream is for after your shower, the waist belt for times of strain, and the posture corrector for when you sit at your monitor.
